Boat Buyers Frequently Asked Questions

How do I decide whether to buy a new boat or buy a used boat? What are the advantages and disadvantages of each?

As with a car, the greatest depreciation of the value of a boat occurs within the first year. Therefore, a used boat generally retains its value to a greater extent than a new one.

In addition, most late model used boats come with the necessary electronics already installed. With new boats, the electronics are usually purchased separately – a major expense. Many late model used boats also have transferable warranties, and engine warranties may be purchased for select models.  <Back to Top>

If I buy a used boat, how do I learn about its history to ensure I do not buy a lemon?

Our brokers are experienced boaters and learn as much as possible about the boats we sell. Nevertheless, all used boats are sold “as is.” Therefore, we strongly recommend a survey be performed by a professional certified by the National Association of Marine Surveyors (NAMS) or the Society of Accredited Marine Surveyors (SAMS) prior to closing. (Depending on the age of the boat, financing and insurance companies usually require a survey, as well.)   <Back to Top>

What type of guarantee does Southwinds Yacht Sales provide on its sales?

How do I determine what is the right size boat for me?

We will help you determine what is the right size boat for you. We will ask you about your intended uses for the boat – for example, are you a fisherman or will the boat be used primarily as a weekend getaway? Your boating interests will allow us to guide you to the right size and type boat.   <Back to Top>
